You brought up NeoGeo so I’ll get this out of the way first. The animations in Metal Slug are quite vivid and it’s really a testament to how much 2D sprites evolved, although that would slowly fade away due to 3D setting into place.
As for modern games, the sprite work in Shovel Knights is pretty damned impressive since they’re trying to go for that 8-bit aesthetic.
